Tour de Lincoln - 2010

This year’s Tour de Lincoln was a blast. Our group, Jim, Robi, Mark, Kim, Tom and Robert, enjoyed a forty mile loop of beautiful country roads, blues sky’s and no mechanical incidents. Thanks Lincoln Volunteer Center for another great day in the saddle.

Jack and Bill Attack the Davis Double

“Over all it went well. I felt really good up to the 96 mile mark and then we started a 7 mile climb up Cobb Mountain. The climb is reported to be between 5-10% with no breaks… on the back side we hit 43 mph on our decent so that was a measure of payback. The hardest part mentally was after dark when you lose the context and perspective of your surroundings. Riding past the Casino about 9:00 pm was the most dangerous stretch…there is no shoulder for 7 miles and the juiced up crazies leaving the casino needed to let us know their feelings about sharing the road. We averaged 13.5 mph in the saddle but our overall time was 18 hours with stops. I’m sure Bill Larson could have done it in 12 or 13 hours. Bill was a true friend, by pacing at my speed instead of his, and letting me hang on his wheel all day. Mission accomplished.” Jack Paddon

These guys look entirley to fresh to have just completed 200 mile

Violators win again

The Violators took the field in the first inning Wednesday night and started off with a shaky start, giving up a couple runs on fielding errors. Then Mr. Brett Billingsley stepped up to the plate and started a very fun night of softball. He hit a sharp line drive to the outfield and made it to second with an outfield not paying attention. Then Ms. Schnee Lopez stepped up and hit her favorite pitches (the ones that are at least two feet over her head) directly into left field, bringing in Brett to get us on the board. As the Violator defense shaped up, (that is, Golden Boy Brian got over the shock of moving over 10 feet to his left at shortstop), The Violators started keeping Guilty Pleasure’s offense to a mild squeak. Then it was the Violator’s turn to crank up the offense. Brian’s redemption song was sung as he circled the bases on an in-the-park, two run, home run, tying us up with Guilty Pleasure. Our self-governing umpire, Ryan Culver decided he was out at first on a force play, even though he wasn’t, proceeding to step off first only to coach first base. Once the Umps figured that one out they rewarded Ryan with a out for his dedication. We capitalized with our famous 2 out rallies which are becoming popular this season. I was lucky to get a hold of a pitch and send a line drive past the second basewoman as the whole right side of the field for Guilty Pleasure seemed clueless as to what to do with a ball hit to them, thus allowing myself an in-the-park, two run, homerun. I would also like to point out that Ms. Toni Mizerek made a great sacrifice for the team as she had a good night of hitting and tweaked her knee on a slide into 3rd after scoring two RBI’s on the hit. We hope she is feeling better and thank her for her contributions. I would also like to thank Beth Sherman for filling in and providing moral support! Thank you to all the Violators for a well played, very fun night of softball.

Violators Take One in Day/Night Double Header

After our hard loss last week to “Steal Your Base”, I would like to thank two women who stepped in to fill the shoes of our regular Violators. I would like to thank Aerie Sandusky for volunteering and giving her all to fill in during our hard loss last week. Aerie filled in the outfield, only to be picked on by our rivals. She then tried second base and had some success teaming up with Amber to get some crucial outs. I would also like to thank Kim Navarro for joining the team to fill in for the whole season for our recovering first basewoman, Elsa Gomez. Kim has been versatile to switch around from Right Field to Catcher, etc. where ever she’s asked to play.

This week both games ended as nail-biters in the final innings. The Violators reciprocated the score for both games as they each ended with a score of 5-4. The defense picked up where they left off as the full team returned to play, keeping the opposition to five runs or less. It was our hitting that needed the improvements as the Violators could barely generate the runs to overcome the Neighbirds and fell short against Garcia’s. But, that’s what makes it exciting! After the final inning against the Neighbirds, the Violators were tied 4-4 going into extra innings. Our speedy 1st basewoman, Sarah Treadwell, is able to poke a single into left field. Then it was our 3rd baseman, Brian Lefholz, left to start a late rally for the win. He smashed a well hit ball to centerfield for a base hit. At this point the centerfielder mishandles the ball and allows for Sarah to huff it to third base before the ball is thrown in. The infielder then misses the throw allowing Sarah to try for Home! She barrels down the third base line, charging hard at a good 2 MPH yet still beating the throw to home as the catcher then drops the ball. She’s safe… and Violators come away (barely) with an exciting second win of the season with score 5-4.

The second game was more of the same, great defense with little offense, with much of the same result. However, Brian Lefholz switched over to the mound to shake off the rust in his pitching arm. Those third base instincts helped greatly as he snagged numerous ground balls hit close to the mound, single handed ending an inning make all three outs. But, as I said, the bats were lacking. We sent many a fly ball to be caught in the outfield, thus leaving many chances to score standing on the bases. However, we went into the final inning with a score of 5-4 with the Violators on the short end. Our professional batboy, Ryan Culver, beats out an infield hit to start a rally to get us back on top. With two outs, Schnee Lopez hits a hard infield blooper as Ryan hussles to 2nd base to beat out the throw. He slides into the base, seemingly beating the throw. “He’s Out!” was the debatable call from the Ump, who seemed hurry to get the next game going. So we were finished for the night losing to Garcia’s by the score of 5-4.

We’ll see you all next week as we take on Guilty Pleasure!

Violators are Back in Action

The Violators begin the Fall season with style. We started by shaking off the rust in the first inning leaving a man on third base and giving up three runs in the first inning, but it was all business from there on. The Violators unleashed a hitting spree that nothing short of fluid. Brian Lefholz picked up from where he left off with his solid hitting as he pulled off an inside-the-park homer to get us going. I’d like to introduce our newest Violator, Schnee Lopez who impressed us with her fine fielding and hitting, as if she’s done this before. We had solid hitting from everyone, including Bev Lund who wound up with two hits and a walk by the end of the night. Elsa Gomez came in for a solo appearance and added to the win, she will be missed as she will take the rest of the season off to recoup from surgery. It was great to have Sarah Treadwell back in the lineup as well, as she covered first base, covered running for Beverly’s hits from first base, nearly took out Jeff Navarro with three consecutive foul hits, and scored multiple runs. It’s just not the same without her, welcome back Sarah! Needless to say the Violators played very well in their opening night of the Fall season as they defeated the Red Light Runners by a score of 15-5.

We hope to see the rest of you W+Pers come out to support us as we enjoy another fun season on the diamond!

Page 13 Violators are humbled by Team Quality!

Friday evening was a lesson to us Violators to never take anything for granted, and that we can be just as fallible as we are triumphant. Sitting in first place at the end of the season, it is true that we had everything to lose and a last place team has everything to gain. We began the evening feeling assured of our first place rank and I admit I was looking forward to the playoffs before our season had come to a close. We took the field already slumped as a confirmed player was absent, granting us an automatic out at crucial moments. The lone highlight for the Violators was that we were able to gain a quick four run lead in the first inning that carried us through most of the game. However, our hot offense from this season was quickly cooled Friday night as we could not generate many more runs. Our lack offense and my/our defensive break down in the final inning left the door wide open for a wonderful come-from-behind win for Team Quality. I want to thank Team Quality for playing a terrific game and for reminding us that the tides may always turn on you. Now as we sit in second place, may we walk into the playoffs as eager and hungry as we’ve ever been. We may take this lesson only to benefit our character and to continue the best season in Violator history.

Violators claim sole ownership of 1st Place!

With the Ball Busters bye this week and the Violator’s win of 13-3 last Friday, THE PAGE 13 VIOLATORS ARE IN FIRST PLACE!!! The only nail biter about this game was whether or not I’d have to forfeit due to a lack of women on my team (only three confirmed for the game). As the final minutes ticked before the first pitch I was able to plead with two women, Sharon Strickland and Nicole Ferrera, from the previous game to stick around and play for us. I’m glad they did because they played great. The rest of the night was business as usual this season. The Violators shut down Vertigoz in dominating fashion and immediately got started by scoring 3 to 5 runs per inning. We had outstanding hitting from the return of our self-inflicted captain, James Engler, who actually hit to right field for first time in his Violator career. James caught everyone off guard and was able to squeeze a triple out of it with a little help from Vertigoz. Some of the standard highlights this season are the long hits from Matt Rudolph, (he does that to give himself some trotting room as he rehabs his leg back to health), the juggling infield plays from James Engler, the dainty curtsies from Amber as she makes her spectacular play in the field or a nice hit, and the Looney Tune like fashion in which we are able to score runs this season (Bugs would be proud). I want to thank all of my fellow Violators as I am having so much fun with our W-L record inverted from years past. Let’s take it all and continue the great sportsmanship that I’m seeing out there.

The Page 13 Violators share 1st place for the 1st time!

The Violators took the field on Friday night with a gleam in their eye and a hunger for first place in their bellies, for a few others it was more like a belly full of beer! We quickly took the lead in the first with four runs as the Ball Busters’ pitcher was having a hard time throwing strikes, and whatever strike he did pitch we “put it where they ain’t”. With a solid lead under our feet, our defense stepped up again and put down our first place rivals with only a few hits to their credit. The Page 13 Violators won in a commanding fashion by a score of 8-2. We had a great round of hitting by all, highlighted by Matt Rudolph, Brian Lefholz, Ryan Culver, & Elsa Gomez. Another highlight was watching Ryan “get on his horse” and safely outrun a couple infield hits. Who’ve thought he could be a rice burner? Thank you to Bev Lund and Rose Cottle for coming out to support us and take some team photos. We hope to see more of our W+P family out to enjoy our winning season. Stay tuned as our next game is against Vertigoz on Friday May 30th. There will be no games this week due to Memorial Weekend.

Violators Show Precision in latest Blowout!

As the beautiful Spring begins to pick away at our vast roster and send everyone on vacation, the Violator’s make the best of what’s around. That’s right, the Violator’s took the field with only four girls on Friday night, causing an automatic out every time a fifth girl is called for, thus putting us at a slight handicap. However, it really didn’t affect us, as we had a record setting 12 run first inning rally that sealed it for the rest of the game. Amongst those runs was a homerun for Brian Lefholz, on a misplay in the outfield. We also showcased our fine oiled machine of an infield as Elsa Gomez recorded four unassisted outs at first base and Jeff Navarro achieved a one-man double play with a quick tag of a base runner and force out at second. As Team Harvest had a hard time throwing strikes (walking over a dozen Violators), we took advantage of their weakness and finished them off with a big score of 13-1.
The exciting game is yet to come as we take on the team who issued our only loss of the season, The Ball Busters. If we can overcome them with our quality play as we have been for last few weeks, then we will be tied for first place, another unprecedented achievement from the Page 13 Violators.
Please come out and cheer on your champion bound Violators this week at 7:20 Friday night!

The Rumble at Woodcreek Golf Course

It was just another typical twilight evening at the golf course for the bi-weekly golf outing; birds chirping, the low muffle of chatter and laughter emanating from the putting green and clubhouse, the sweet smell of grass on a light evening breeze, and good company as always. Yep, Tuesday twilight golf was here again and all those who showed up had been looking forward to playing and especially since it was a different course, Woodcreek. But alas, this would be anything but a normal golf outing. Brett and I had been waiting for Naaz and her son so we could tee off when we let a large gentlemen and his twenty something son go ahead of us since we were waiting. They tee off and fifteen minutes later, no Naaz. So we decide she can catch up and we both tee off. As we make our way up the fairway, fairly happy with both of our shots, we notice the larger man standing next to the cart pacing back and forth writhing and yelling profanities into the air… My drive nailed this guy square in the back. As we walk over to apologize and explain we didn’t see them and it was an accident, they start yelling at us like we were trying to start a fight or hit at them intentionally. The small guy comes up to me as I explain but again starts yelling at me, meanwhile the gentlemen who was hit looks like he’s starting to settle down and regain his composure all the while I’m thinking “am I really going to get in a fight in the middle of a golf course?” Brett then steps in and again says it was an accident. By this time I think they realized that if we were to throw down they would be at a disadvantage with only one healthy person, so they continued on their way all the while glaring back at us… and then Naaz shows up.

The Unofficial History of Hacky Sack

The co-operative kicking sport of Hacky Sack has ancient origins from China, Thailand, Native America and nearly every country. Perhaps one of the most interesting hacky sack stories stems from Scotland during the dark ages. As the story goes, young shepherds would often kick stones to each other to pass the time while they tended their flocks.
On a related note, the game that we play in the parking stalls at lunch, “Handi-Hack” or “Hack Pong”, whichever you prefer, is sweeping the country as a new sport. I have included a few images taken from a recent tournament. There is even talk of including it in this year’s Olympic Games! Fox Television has also contacted us for the rights to create a new reality television show based upon the game called “So You Think You Can Hack?” Anyone is welcome to join us at lunch in the parking lot if you are interested in playing.

Violators Open A Can on Team Quality!!!

The Page 13 Violators took an early lead on Team Quality Friday night and they never looked back. That’s right, we gave them a wallop with the final score of 14-3. We had near perfect play from everyone in the field and very productive hitting. Team Quality was having a hard time giving us pitches as they walked half our batters, Amber walked twice, Brian was very stingy as he took close to 10 pitches before he walked. Amber gets the PLAY OF THE WEEK!! with her diving stop at second base. She knocked down a line drive, then flicks her glove to Brian in true “talk to the hand” fashion to get the force out at second base. The Violators also rallied with two outs late in the game to make mild lead over Team Quality into a downright smackdown. As we quickly gained two outs in the fifth inning, the hits just started flowing as we went ahead to score 4 runs before ending the inning. With our win, we have taken an unprecedented 3-1 record for the season, never before have played at this level. I want add that W+P should be proud of their Violators. They have been playing with the upmost sportsmanship and competitive spirit and they are truly enjoying the rewards. Stay tuned next week as we take on the Team Harvest next week, Amber’s favorite team.

The Violators Get Back on Track in a BIG Way!

That’s right, the Violators goose-egged Vertigoz on Friday night with a score of 7-0. The best part about it was that we had prime talent out on the field. We led off with solid hitting from line up led by Brian Lefholz, Matt Rudolph, James Engler, Fran Montanari, Leah Polcyn, and company. The defense was also at its peak with highlights from James Engler as he single handedly made a double play, catching a line drive and quickly tagging an unsuspecting base runner. Vertigoz never had a chance as they had but only one runner reach third base. We are on track to have the best season ever since the formation of our ragtag crew. May we keep up the momentum with our 2-1 record into the fourth week. We can play with anyone in this league and I’d say that we are the cream of the crop.
GO VIOLATORS!!!

Violator's Fall to 1-1

As we gathered for our pre-game warm up we were feeling pretty good about our chances. After all...we were undefeated. As we took the field behind, our star pitcher Matt Rudolph, I couldn't help but notice the lack of electricity in the air. You see, our 6 time gold glove winning short-stop James was unavailable for the game do to illness. But we picked our heads up and did the best we could without his usual constant direction on how to play the game. The infield (Jeff, Elsa, Amber) played an almost perfect game. Jeff was either lucky or good (I'll let you know after the next game), snagging everything that came his way. Amber was a brick wall at second and Elsa made our poor throwing look great at first base. Our outfield had some errors but we rallied back with some clutch hitting in the late innings. We hung in the game until the end but came up 2 runs short, losing 7-5. Thanks to all our groupies who filled the stands in support of our effort.

P.S. - Be sure to wish Greg Tonello a speedy recovery from a pulled hamstring.

THE VIOLATOR’S RUN AWAY WITH THEIR FIRST WIN OF SPRING!!!

(Read in your best Howard Cosell voice...)
As the Page 13 Violators took the field and shook off the jitters, they picked up where they left off last season with the drive to win. The season started against Team Harvest, a team formed by a local Citrus Heights church, full of positive energy. The Violators were first to bat and quickly got on the scoreboard to show that the new wood bats didn’t faze them. Once we took the field, we also took over and held off the churches advances of scoring, with the exception of our second basewoman Amber Seevers who seemed to have scored a phone number of a Harvest base runner who very clearly violated our lead off Violator. Team Harvest returned with their own sound fielding as they snagged multiple well hit balls out of the air and breaking our defenses to put up some runs and capitalize on our errors. However, in true W+P fashion, the Violator’s did not go down into the night, they came up to the plate and hosted a round good hitting led by James Engler, Amber Seevers, Eric Driever, Matt Rudolph, Leah Polcyn, Elsa Gomez and Brian Lefholz. With this great push over the hump to put the us back into the lead for good, the Page 13 Violator’s walked away with 6-5 win over Team Harvest on Friday night. Thank you to the Tonello family and all the W+P family for coming out to support us with another exciting night of Coed Softball. Stay tuned as the Page 13 Violator’s take on the Ball Busters this Friday at 9:20pm.

Violator Softball Tonight!!!

As you all know by now the Violator’s Spring season is upon us and our first game is Friday, April 4th @ 7:20pm. I want to thank my fellow 2008 Violators squad as we have an overwhelming turnout this year ( I may actually have to turn some people away for some games!?!) I am looking forward to multi-generational team that we have formed from W+P softball past & future coming together to leave it all out on the field. We have Greg “The Hammer” Tonello coming out of retirement who is proving to us whippersnappers where his nickname came from. We have design extraordinaire, Terry Green, who has mention that he will make an appearance this season and amaze us with his throwing arm. We brought up, “Young-er Brian” Lefholz from our farm team in Arizona, a one man team at pitcher, left field, third base, etc. And lastly, we have recruited some our very enthusiastic interns, Stephanie “Shot Put” Scattini. I have longed for the smell of the grass, the dirty leather gloves, the wise cracks from the peanut gallery and the uplifting cheers from our very own Mama Violator, Mary Shelnut. I only hope she is able to expand her cheering section this year with more that own relatives. Come on out, W+Pers and family its an exciting night of drama and pure competition.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

Introducing We sAck

Most of you have probably noticed the new gang of “toughs” that hangs out near the main entrance of the building. In fact some of you may have even been the innocent victim of a miss-kicked hacky as you ran the gauntlet into the front doors. We are “We sAck”, made up of Brian “Elf Shoes” Lefholz, Jeff “Finesse” Navarro, Brett “The Bruiser” Billingsley, and me, Tye “insert synonym for uncoordinated here such as, bumbling, graceless, heavy-footed, lumbering, ungainly” Brown. You will be happy to know that we have moved our crew into the handicap parking stalls, which if you have ever watched us for a moment is probably much more appropriate (see image). Despite our physical limitations, and as long as weather, work, and wives permit will be playing hacky sack during lunch, and all are welcome to participate and join in the mutual embarrassment that is hacky sack.

Honorary We sAck members include; Robert Wallis (“Blame it on the Shoes” Award), Dave King (“Most Improved Player” Award), Jack Paddon (“Way to Narrowly Avoid Brian’s Foot In Your Face” Award), and Leah Polcyn who’s honorary membership is under probation due to her performance of a controversial move that is outlawed in all 50 states according to NHSA (National Hacky Sack Association). Others have 'tried' with little success but none the less deserve a shout out...Terry Green, Jim Williams, Greg Tonello, Andrea Jaggers, Stephanie Scattini, and Amber Seevers.

Watch for more information on We sAck in the future.

Violator Softball

The time has finally arrived...Violator Softball is back! With spring training behind us we look for our first victory this Friday at 7:20 p.m. at Rusch Field #2. A big thanks goes out to Coach Will Sandusky for organizing all of the WP hooligans and putting together a great squad this season. There's just something about the smell of fresh cut grass, the sound of a crisp line drive up the middle and the roar of the crowd. That's where you come in...we need a crowd! I think we had a total of 1 fan last year (thanks Mary) so come out and witness the incredible display that is known throughout the region as Violator softball.

Twilight Golf...FORE!!!

The first Twilight Golf extravaganza of the year was a great success! Ten brave souls, two and half groups, were the first of the year to strut their stuff on the tee. Battling through bugs, the elements, and large smoke signals being sent from a nearby house. Yeah, that’s right, smoke signals. One of the houses along the side of the course had large clouds of smoke coming from its chimney blanketing the course so you couldn’t see. I know what you’re thinking and no the house was not on fire.
But of those ten only two, Brian Lefholz and Bill Turner, found enlightenment through near death experiences. The first enlightened soul, Brian, was standing behind the head hunter, Amber Seevers, at a 15 degree angle which should have been enough to avoid any errant shot. But alas, this was not enough and as Amber swung through with a powerful “umf!” the ball was sent barreling into Brian’s golf bag only inches from missing his rib cage. As for Bill, his experience was a little less dramatic. Paul Walsh was having a tough time getting through the first hole and had landed his ball in a green side sand trap. As Paul was setting up and taking his aim at greatness, Bill happened to be walking along the back side of the green setting his bag down totally oblivious to the mighty stoke Paul was about to unleash. Then in a flash the ball exploded from sand taking aim not for the green but for Bill…luckily as everyone screamed in horror Bill quickly turned and the ball was caught in his golf towel.
So, lessons learned from the first twilight golf evening of the year: if you want to learn how to hit your ball backwards talk to Amber, and if you want to avoid being hit or killed stay behind the person hitting. I hope everyone in the office will consider joining us next time, March 25th, for some golf, some laughs, and some enlightenment.

Put me in coach... I'm ready to play

Violator softball is back baby! After a long winter break we took the field last week for spring training. Suffice it to say that we had more than a bit of surface rust to shake off (and we've got the bruises to prove it!)...especially those in the over 40 club. We welcomed back "The Hammer" Greg Tonello and added a few fresh new faces to the lineup. From the looks of things it's going to be an 'interesting' season. If we can keep our bruises and sore muscles to a minimum and actually make contact when we swing, we may just have a shot at mediocrity this season.

As a side note: The cartoon above was inspired by our own 'self-inflicted' captain James Engler.
