Weekly workplace humor #9

Rule #9: Build Vocabulary

Read up on some architecture magazines and pick out all the jargon and new products. Use the phrases freely when in conversation with bosses. Remember: They don’t have to understand what you say, but you will sound impressive.

WP - May is Bike Month Awards (Finally)

It only took us until July to hand out awards for May but that's just how we roll around here. Thanks to everyone who participated in May is Bike Month helping us ride an astounding 9,240 miles!

The big winners are...
- Jack Paddon for being male and riding the most miles (772)
- Nancy Paddon for being female and riding the most miles (500)
- Kim Settle for the most commute to/from work miles
- Brian L. for most miles on a borrowed bike..thanks Andrea (543)

WP wins "May is Bike Month Awards"

The City of Roseville recognized WP's bicycling efforts by awarding them "Bike Friendly Employer of the Year" in Roseville and "Top Mileage by a Small Employer" in the greater Sacramento region. A small group of WP die hard riders pulled the jersey's on one more time and rode the wonderfully scenic bike trails and roads of Roseville to accept our awards at last weeks city council meeting. The riders included Andrea, Jack, Jim, Paul, Brian L., Mark and Robi and were joined by Trish, Rose and Nora at the meeting. And yes...that's our team leading the Pledge of Allegiance to start the meeting. We had a great time riding together and really appreciate the City of Roseville recognizing our efforts during the month of May.

Dan's 10th Anniversary with WP

What can you say about a man who says everything? You see, Dan's a bit of a story teller. Most of us know him very well...this is due in part to his not so quiet voice and the fact that he repeats every story at least 43 times a day until he's sure everyone has heard it. Honestly, it seems like Dan's been around forever. Rumor has it that he came to WP right after graduating from kindergarten (and yes...he had a full mustache then too). He is celebrating 10 years of service with the firm and in recognition he received a $1000 travel voucher, some WP bucks and other goodies as a token of appreciation from the firm. And no Dan, you cannot buy a one-way ticket with that voucher, we want you back! We look forward to many more years of Dan's delightful personality and bad joke telling.

Friday Night Concert in the Park

A few weeks ago Jodie posted about how much she enjoyed Roseville's Music in the Park. This is a great concert series that happens once a month in Roseville's Royer Park. But what does one do if they live downtown? Well, I'll tell you...head on over to Caesar Chavez Park (10th and J) for Sacramento's Friday Night Concerts in the Park. This free concert series features local artists representing a range of genres including rock, pop, punk, blues and folk. This Friday's concert features Richard March, Kate Gaffney, Agent Ribbons, and The Juggs.

With Gas Over $4, Cities Explore Whether It's Smart to Be Dense

A great story on the Sacramento Region and our Blueprint project (click here). FYI, in 2004 I was honored by SACOG (the organization that led Blueprint) as the Region’s “Citizen of the Year” for “exemplary contribution and leadership in public involvement for the Blueprint Project.” The process was facilitated by Valley Vision, an organization for which I have served on the Executive Board for the last 6 years or so.

It is fun and gratifying to see the acknowledgements of the project in a national publication like the Wall Street Journal.

Rule #8. Stacking strategy

It’s not enough to stack lots of documents on the table. Put lots of books on the floor. (thick computer manuals are the best)
